The blue glasses philosophy.

Look at Amsterdam through its water and the city stops being buildings and streets. It becomes a system, a rhythm, a set of neighbors. That is the whole idea behind Sidewalk Stories.

About

Hi, I'm Isabelle.

I was born in Amsterdam, studied here, and spent years working as a canal tour guide. That is where I realized how much of this city is actually water, and how few of us talk about it that way.

After running the same canal route hundreds of times, my attention shifted from the polished stories to the people who keep the water working: skippers, bridge operators, boat builders, and the teams at the waterschap and the municipality.

They know exactly which crossing will jam up on a Friday afternoon, which quay is being renewed next year, and which houseboat has been in the same family for four generations. That knowledge deserves a wider audience.

Once you put on the blue glasses, Amsterdam makes a different kind of sense. It becomes a floating city with rules, rhythms and neighbors. Fair warning: you will not be able to unsee it.

Sidewalk Stories is my way of sharing that view: slower, specific, and from the inside out.
